Dallas, TX. For the Christian, the visible creation has a special importance. It is not only created good by God, but it is also caught up in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who not only took on a physical body, but redeems the whole of creation along with the human race (See Eph 1:10, Col 1:20). Throughout the Scriptures, elements of the physical creation are used by God as signs and instruments, to redeem the servants of God. Water, wood, blood, bread, wine, oil, and the list goes on… It is appropriate, then, that Christ established the Sacraments as signs and instruments of grace in the New Covenant, and that physical items can be blessed and set apart for holy purposes. Because of all this, Catholics are sometimes said to have a “sacramental view of reality.”
For this reason, the Sacraments, sacramentals and our Catholic “smells and bells” can be a great ways to introduce and share the Catholic faith with others. Here in the picture, we see evangelist Mark explaining to a nondenominational Christian couple some of the physical signs that Catholics use. He explained the Rosary and why we pray it, and talked about the Sacraments as special means by which God infuses grace into us. They were open to listening and took rosaries, pamphlets, and CD’s.
