This report is the first in a two-part story from team leader Lucy in Boise, Idaho:

Two people, who were promoting a restaurant, stopped at the table when the man expressed an interest in the Rosary. He is completely unchurched but said he’s becoming interested in religion. The evangelist handed him a Good News/kerygma pamphlet to read when he isn’t in such a hurry and explained the Rosary as a way to understand Jesus. The woman also selected a Rosary. Lord Jesus, please guide our visitors to all truth, that is, to You!

A shy, college-aged Catholic stopped for a Rosary. He’s fairly new in town, he said, and hasn’t found a parish home yet. He’d already attended the local university’s Newman Center a couple of times, but wasn’t enthusiastic about it. The evangelist gave him a copy of our map to area parishes, pointing out another one in the area. He also chose a Rosary. Lord, help your beloved son find a parish home, where he will be welcomed and nurtured in his Faith.

Long-time visitor “Uwe”, although initially avoiding eye contact, stopped for a fairly lengthy discussion once the evangelist addressed him. She asked him a question about his philosophy, which he didn’t answer, but he did try to explain more about his worldview. Unfortunately, it seems to be basically dog-eat-dog, with everyone protecting their own small group. The evangelist pointed out that that doesn’t work in the long run. “Yes,” Uwe conceded, “groups would have to have some way of growing and welcoming in others.” During the conversation, he also emphasized that vulnerable people need to be protected, and that fathers naturally want to protect their children. This seems to be a new idea for him, since the last time he mentioned fathers it was as “always harsh and disciplinary” (and so was his main objection to thinking of God as Father). Uwe’s philosophy still doesn’t hang together as a whole, but I’m glad to see it continue to shift in more Catholic-friendly (i.e., rational) directions. Please continue to pray for Uwe.
